Greeley Creative District 2020 Time Capsule Project

Has the word “unprecedented” ever been used more times in one year? We doubted it, and that is why it seemed that 2020 was just the year to mark its passage in a special way.

The Greeley Creative District decided to enlist the imagination and perspectives of the Greeley Creative Community to help reflect upon this unusual year, offer perspective or interpretation of this period, and offer a message to future community members. This treasure of experiences, artwork, essays, and materials would be bundled into a time capsule container to be opened in 2070. One of our community partners, the High Plains Library District, has agreed to be the host site of the capsule at its planned Library Innovation Center in downtown Greeley.

While we offered some prompts for the Creatives to consider in their time capsule contributions we did not judge or limit what could be contributed but for size and quantity. We asked only that the material submitted offer some connection to the high water mark of change experienced in 2020.

Our invitation to the Creatives was sent out the last week of November with a mid-December deadline to submit. Items immediately began to arrive for our time capsule. Essays, artwork, event programs, writings, photographs, letters, stories, images, poems, posters, and ….. face masks. We are thrilled with the enthusiastic, insightful, and generous participation of our Creative Community and feel sure that the future leaders who view this trove of works will share our special appreciation for the reflections, ideas, creations, perspective, and gratitude expressed in these works. We could not be more proud of Greeley’s Creatives.

The items to be discovered within the Greeley Creative District 2020 Time Capsule, sealed and secured on December 31, 2020, include the works of 27 creative organizations, businesses or entities and the combined contribution of over 100 individual creatives, writers, performers, and artists. We think that is an impressive showing!

We are sharing here but a small sample from the many contributions of Creatives who participated to offer a flavor of the breadth and depth of the works included. We have encouraged but left it to the discretion of our creatives to share their submittals and works as fully as they might like among their own networks and on social media.
