Local Spotlight: The Community Grief Center
While the Community Grief Center is not a crisis or counseling center, they offer free, specialized grief support programs based on Dr. Alan Wolfelt's "companioning model" for people of all ages who are grieving the death of a loved one. Their facilitated groups, overseen by a licensed professional counselor, bring people who have experienced a similar loss together to find hope and healing through connection.
Since the upcoming Dia De Los Muertos holiday is a communal celebration to commemorate loved ones who have passed, the Community Grief Center is partnering with us this year to honor the holiday. At our FREE Community Celebration on 11/2 (5-7pm) at Millennium Event Center, the Community Grief Center will be sharing about their programs and leading some creative activities.

Black Geographies: Remapping the Landscape
In her reflective works Quinn beautifully confronts black erasure--our tendency to step over or dismiss parts of our troubling past particularly in the way that we present and inhabit spaces. With her body of work "Black Geographies: Remapping The Landscape," Quinn challenges the romanticized, nostalgic portrayal of the Antebellum South common in our culture. Movies like Gone With The Wind, which depict it as a "pretty world of gallantry... of Knights and their Ladies... it is no more than a dream remembered." While the south was a dream for some, it was more of a nightmare for the black bodies exploited and broken for its opulence.

Board Member Spotlight: Sue Safarik
A lifelong learner and creative dabbler, Sue is eager to help you find what you are seeking or better yet, something you never imagined.
Though kindly reserved, when pressed Sue describes her private life as, “fairly quiet.” Which is quite fitting given her chosen vocation as a Reference Librarian. While studious and subdued in some aspects, this work also complements Sue’s introversion by drawing her out into energizing community interaction, public service and continual learning.
